• -8:30-8:40 Mrs. Edwards told us our partners for this project and gave us the basic instructions of what our Pop-Up book required. Note: Be very creative. Ideas given as examples in class don’t count.

• -8:40-9:00 Mrs. Edwards gave us the questions that need to be answered in our Pop-Up book while she recorded us on her iPad because she is pulling lessons from Verizon who we are partnered with.

• Next week, Mrs. Edwards will assign us a project that has to do with one of the characters we picked. We will be given partners based on what characters we chose and there will only be 2 class days to work on this project. So who’s excited for next week?

-Tone, characterization, irony

• Like we were promised, Mrs. Edwards had given us a short lesson about tone, characterization, and irony. These three different writing techniques were used in Chaucer’s character prologue to show his special way of writing.
• EXTRA CREDIT for highlighting real uses of irony in the song lyrics of “Ironic” by Alanis Morissete. You must look at the whole song to receive two extra credit points.

-Extra credit and your reading of an SSR classic novel was also due today

And finally, a special shout out to Evan and Jose for being two of the six people in the junior class to receive a high word masters average. Not only will they get to have bragging rights, but they also get an extra boost in their grade! Lucky ducks.

• Today we took a ten question quiz on Chaucer’s life, it is NOT an open book test. So be sure to take notes, it really helps!

-Blog Assignment #16

• It’s a really simple blog assignment, so make sure to  do it.

-Prologue reading + 3 favorite characters and why you chose them (DUE FRIDAY)

Overall, today was a fairly easy day. SSR, a short quiz, and then reading for the rest of the class. Just remember to finish reading the prologue before Friday and write down your favorite three characters, and then you’ll be all set!

- Collect WW #1 artifacts

• In other words, Mrs. Edwards collected all of our Writing Workshop pieces that were stamped and the papers that were required 3 revisions/edits.

-Intro to “Canterbury Tales”

• We watched a Youtube clip of the English spoken back in the day. Many found this entertaining yet humorous.

-Read Chaucer Bio (page 107)

• Chaucer was the father of Literature and for today we got to read about his life!
• Oh and there is a quiz tomorrow and it IS open note.

-Begin prologue reading and write down 3 of your favorite characters and why you chose them.

Mini-lesson: The Reflective Essay (The Rubric)

Since Mrs. Edwards was not able to give us our mini-lesson the otherday when Mrs. Hunzeker came in, Ms. Jones gave it in her stead today. She went over some tips for writing a Reflective Essay (Anyone writing a mission statement to the colleges should probably use the tips she gave us.) Here are some of them:

• The incident must be clear to the reader.
• Use truisms to defend your point.
• Use strong verbs and imagery.
• Must have a then and now and a change must be present.
• No bumper stickers/cliches. Be fresh and sincere.

Remember! A physical copy is due in class on Tuesday, January 17th.  A electronic copy must also be turned in to Turnitin.com by 3rd block, Tuesday, January 17th. The class number for East House is 4679694 and the password is english .

Make sure to include your statement of purpose (see your Blog # 12) as the heading for your uploaded final piece. This will not count toward final word count of 1000 words MAX.

Today we were able to have about 5 minutes of SSR before Mrs. Hunzeker entered the class to give us some very important information about college and having a plan prepared in advance instead of waiting until the last minute. Though many of us might not want to face it just yet, our time at I Poly is almost at an end and its time for many of us to decide what we want to do after high school, whether that means college or some other course of action. I implore all of you to take Hunzeker up on her invitation to go have a meeting with her and start the planning process for after high school. I did so today, and I can tell you personally that it was quite rewarding and my plans for the future are much clearer now. You can make an appointment by walking into the Counseling Office, talking to the lady at the front, and picking out a time and date that is available for you.

The rest of class was given to us to work on our essays. Remember to be working on them with what remaining time we have! You need to have proof of 3 revisions, must turn in an electronic copy, and must turn in a hard copy to Mrs. Edwards on Tuesday.
